Asia SEED has been accepting and supporting students
from governments of Southeast Asian countries starting with Indonesia
since 1985. Taking Indonesian students for example, over 2,000
excellent youngsters have studied science technology and Japanese
culture at universities, special institutions, and companies in
Japan. Many of these students are currently contributing to the
development of their country and working as a bridge between Indonesia
and Japan.
In recent years, more and more people have traveled to Southeast Asia. Furthermore, various information can be obtained from news on TV or newspapers every day. As you can see, the relationship between Japan and the various Southeast Asian countries has strengthened and the situation of each of the Southeast Asian countries has an influence on our everyday lives as well. However, we Japanese do not yet know much about these Southeast Asian countries. Therefore, to make the best use of Asia Seed's past experiences, we have planned a "study tour" to the ancient city of Jogjakarta, Indonesia to study and experience Indonesian and different cultures.
Jogjakarta is known for its safety compared to other cities in Indonesia. The Grand Palace is located at the center of the city and there are over 50 educational institutes (universities, colleges and technical colleges) including Gajah Mada University, which is one of the top universities in Indonesia. Since more than 30% of the population are students, Jogjakarta is an active educational cultural city. Once you go to the suburbs of the city, there are ancient ruins such as Borobudur (Buddhist ruins) or Prambanan (Hindu ruins), you can see this is a region where traditional cultures and nature coexist as well.
Indonesia is said to be one of the roots of Japanese people. You may feel that you are back in your hometown once you step into Jogjakarta. We hope that many people will participate in this study tour and we can foster friendly relations between participants and local people.
